Submental Liposculpture

**Results may vary from person to person**

What is Submental Liposculpture?

Submental Liposculpture is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove excess fat. This is often a problem in younger patients who, despite diet and exercise, have some excess rounding in the area under the chin – often hereditary. Having a relatively small amount of fat removed via Liposuction can make all the difference.

Who is a good candidate?

Someone concerned with the following characteristics:

  • Stubborn fatty deposits under the chin and neck region that do not respond to diet and exercise.
  • Double chin

Who is not a good candidate?

Someone concerned with the following characteristics:

  • Weight loss alternative
  • Unrealistic expectations

The procedure

Dr Oates performs Submental Liposculpture at Academy Day Hospital under twilight sedation and local anaesthetic (tumescent fluid).

Tiny incisions, are made under the chin , also behind the ears. Using small specialised suction cannulas, the fat is gently removed using suction .

How long will I take off work?

7-14 days depending on the amount of physical activity involved in your line of work.

The recovery

You may experience some swelling and bruising. This is normal.

During the first24-48 hours following surgery, excess fluid (tumescent) may drain from the small incisions. You may be required to wear a facial garment for 1 week.

Is there discomfort?

You may experience mild to moderate discomfort. Discomfort can be managed with Panadeine forte or Panadol.

Pre and post operative care

Your pre and post operative care is managed by our Registered Nurses. This will include pre operative assessment and post operative wound management.

Risks and complications

Submental Liposculpture is usually very safe and complications are rare, however there is a small risk of complications with any surgical procedure. These may include:

  • Infection
  • Asymmetry

I’m interested, what’s the next step?

Your first step is an initial consultation with Dr Oates. If you have a GP referral you can claim some of the cost from Medicare. If Dr Oates decides you are a suitable candidate for Submental Liposculpture and you want to go ahead, a booking for surgery and the pre operative care is scheduled. The usual waiting time is three to four weeks.

Complimentary consultation

You may wish to speak to our Nurse Consultant prior to seeing Dr Oates. During this complimentary consultation, both surgical and non surgical options can be discussed to treat your concern(s).
