Jessner’s Peel

What is Jessner’s Peel?

The solution used in Jessner’s Peel induces a superficial peeling of the skin and is particularly effective for treating oily skin and acne conditions in some people. A main ingredient of Jessner’s is salicylic acid which deeply penetrates the skin, and removes congested sebum and dead skin cells. The solutions can be applied in a layered fashion which provides a variety of results.

What can Jessner’s peel treat?

  • Retexturise thickened or oily skin
  • Improve the appearance of large pores
  • Improve absorption of products through exfoliation of the skin’s upper layer
  • Blackheads and acne prone skin
  • Acne-prone areas on the body (back, arms and chest)
  • In-grown hairs (follicular barbae)

**Results may vary from person to person**

  • Allergies to aspirin-based products, resorcinol or lactic acid
  • Use of roaccutane
  • Seek additional medical advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Facial surgery in the last 12 months
  • Open wounds, including eczema, dermatitis, rosacea
  • Cold sores
  • Cancer or radiation therapy
  • Waxing, laser therapy, IPL or injectable treatments in the last week
  • Sunburn

Please advise the dermal therapist or registered nurse if you are prone to cold sores.

How many sessions do I need?

A course of 3-6 peels is recommended, dependent on your skin type, the skin condition to be treated, the peel strength and desired outcome.

What does it feel like?

Jessner’s solution is of a low pH meaning that it will sting a little bit. During the 10-20 minutes of application, patients hold a device that gently blows cool air to help reduce the sting.

How does my skin look after the treatment?

  • For 12-48 hours you can expect mild to moderate redness and mild sensitivity
  • Make up can be worn immediately after treatment
  • Skin will likely feel tight and dry

Potential complications

  • Peeling skin that is removed prematurely can cause infection and scarring
  • If you are prone to cold sores you may have an outbreak
  • Hyperpigmentation for up to 12 months
  • A mild, temporary swelling of the treatment area may be experienced by some clients

Skin Preparation

We recommend that your skin is primed with active ingredients for at least two weeks before the Jessner’s peel to maximise the outcome, improve healing time and reduce complication risk.

Patient After-Care for Superficial Peels

Changes that can be expected for 7-14 days include:

Day 1-3: Dry, tight skin with some sensitivity and moderate redness

Day 2-5: Areas of darkened skin (the old skin getting ready to peel off)

Day 3-7: Peeling or light flaking

For 5-7 days post-peel:

  • Do not exfoliate or pick off peeling skin
  • Avoid products that contain AHA’s, BHA’s, Vitamin A (Retinol), astringents or exfoliating granules
  • Don’t expose your skin to the sun
  • Apply sunscreen daily
  • The skin should be kept moist for this time so apply moisturiser as necessary
  • Avoid exercise, saunas, salt and chlorine pools, steam baths and hot showers for 48 hours
  • Don’t use waxing, IPL, laser or depilatory creams for 2 weeks
  • Tanning products should not be used for 2 weeks

Suggested Homecare for 5-7 days

Avoiding exfoliating products for 5-7 days is important after a Jessner’s peel, as is avoidance of sun sensitivities so applying a sunscreen daily is strongly advised. We recommend the following regimes:

Normal/ Dry Skin Types

  • Ultra Hydrating Milk Cleanser
  • Recovery Face & Body Cream
  • Ultra Moisturiser Cream/ Ultimate Bio-Repair Moisturiser
  • Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF30-50+

Normal/ Oily Skin Types

  • Ultra Balancing Gel Cleanser
  • Recovery Face & Body Cream
  • Ultra Hydrating Lotion
  • Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF30-50+
